Face Your Mortality: Free Your Mind

The origin of all fear is death.

Perception is dynamic. We perceive ourselves through the distortion field of our minds.

Beliefs and values can change dramatically over time.

Perception is the malleable lens by which we understand the world and ourselves. Ambiguous reality is a problem for many and an opportunity for the curious.

Those who have achieved material success and find themselves deep in malcontent and questioning life's "real" purpose demonstrate a changing perspective. Was the game not well played?

Striving for a large portion of life without pause or analysis is the path for most of us.

Striving and languishing are twin tormentors to anyone wrapped up in the chase for material gain.

In the United States, the prescribed retirement includes:

  • Living out your remaining days in Florida or Arizona.

  • Managing medications and frequent specialist doctor visits.

  • Riding your golf cart around the golf course for "exercise".

No shame if that is your dream for riding out your days on this planet.

Those who wish to look back upon a more colorful tapestry of life should consider pausing and considering the end.

Building someone else's big dream can be a launchpad to building your big dream if you realize the learnings and take a leap of faith.

Leaping toward unknown destinations is like leaping into any abyss, terrifying to the point we are confident the end is near.

Most fear the contemplation of death so profoundly that any avoidance tactic is more acceptable than sitting in the reality that we all share.

We arrive, and by doing so, we shall depart.

Departure by death is the only way out as we are not in the chapter of our human journey in which we have an alternative.

When we are young and full of energy, death seems too far off to be worth consideration.

We round a corner, often as the decades shift, measured by birthday balloons that joke about being over the hill.

For the sake of argument, imagine that 40 is the average age when thoughts of the end enter our mind, like the uninvited guest at our birthday bash.

Who is this mysterious guest, and why is it so terrifying to look them in the eye?

The reflection of our life might give us a clue.

If we are aware of our choices and have lived by this awareness for some time, the fresh face at the party is not a threat but rather a familiar aspect of the mortal self. We have reconciled with our time-bound existence and made plans for our demise so that our loved ones might grieve, unencumbered upon our passing.

Death is the shadow cast across our lifespan; left unconsidered, we meet death as an intruder.

To meditate on our end is a path to freedom from ultimate anxiety.

Once you look your greatest fear in the eye, you observe your reflection staring back.

Our minds cannot comprehend the nonlinear expanse of existence, death, and rebirth in all forms. Realizing our smallness amidst the vastness, let this be a weighted blanket to your soul.

Our brothers and sisters are small too; even those who have achieved the greatest of accomplishments are specs of infinitely small arrangements of atoms, just like you and I.

Living a life that generates opportunity for those who come behind us is the ultimate reciprocity. A great selfishness takes over when we cling to our turn on this mortal coil above all else.

Like the breath, life is exhalation and inhalation, coming and going. We are part of this process, and it is our right and responsibility to free ourselves from disingenuous and inauthentic thought patterns and belief systems that do not serve us or our higher purpose.

The path to unshackling our bonds is self-awareness gained through reflection and sitting with our inner workings until we know ourselves, our fears, and our desires as we know our own reflection.

For five minutes, sit with closed eyes and relaxed deep breaths, ask yourself about your fears, and notice what happens in your body.

Once you feel you have adequately explored these sensations, shift your thoughts to thoughts of gratitude, focusing on the sensations arising throughout your body.

Notice how your body responds to each thought and allow yourself to set an intention for this day from the place of gratitude.

I have created a toolkit for fighting burnout to keep you in the game for as long as you want to stay, and if you decide to leave and begin anew, it will be on your terms and in your bodily and mental well-being.

High achievers are in every field; we push ourselves to prove our worth and are wonderful at succeeding. We are absolute rubbish at remembering our minds live within bodies — our bodies.
