Doubt is Universal: Don't Let it Derail You.
Transform doubt and uncertainty into useful tools to fuel your practice.

Doubt and the Arena of Honest Work
The story I want to tell is about the moments in our practices when doubt weasels its way into our brains. Call it intrusive thoughts or an everyday moment of self-doubt. At the end of the day, if this feeling steals your creative energy, you can call it a problem.
Doubt finds its opening in the cracks of rejection, sneaking in when validation is absent. For those of us who work in solitary practice, be it as a software engineer coding an application in the quiet or soft techno rhythms of headphones or a painter slowly and deliberately building up a masterpiece that will grace a beautiful wall, given fortune's good tidings, or a composer building the layers of an opera, these solitary creative pursuits are not without their moments of questioning.
We may have internalized the truth that no success, no victory, and no validation even, comes without a share far greater in size of rejection. We may know this in our bones, but that does not mean that those moments of doubt don't occasionally set us back, particularly when we have days or even weeks where our mental health is not at its peak. Perhaps it's just wintertime, and we have some winter blues, or it's the toll of the routine we've built for ourselves and the amount of structure we must employ to keep ourselves marching to the rhythm of our own drum and to the goal that we see ahead of us. Whether it's winter blues or the toll of our structured routines, these doubts can steal our beloved studio time right from under our noses.
The Discomfort in Meaningful Creation
Doubt enters the arena with us when we do our most honest work. In those dark corners of creative solitude—where all that exists is our vision and the tools of our craft—there is a rawness that leaves us vulnerable.
It is precisely in those moments, when your confidence evaporates that you find yourself face-to-face with possibility. Seth Godin would call this the essential discomfort of creating something that matters, the trembling hands that ship the work anyway. Steve Jobs might say it is the price of pushing the human experience forward because to make a dent in the universe, you must wrestle the weight of your fears.
Yet the daily repetition of facing that blank page, empty canvas, or silent code editor can wear on you, especially during winter's introspective hush. The drumbeat of routine can lull you into a space where your doubts echo more loudly than your ambition. Creative progress, however, is not linear. There are cracks in the road where you may stumble, but each stumble is a reminder of your devotion to bringing something entirely new into the world. Rejection and uncertainty are part of the toll for entry. The routine shapes us, reminds us to show up, and offers a lens through which we reaffirm our commitment, even when our reflections cast a shadow.
Even the intervals of self-questioning can become a fertile territory. The friction of doubt can be transmuted into a fuel that propels innovation given processes that support this angle. Much like the software engineer debugging a complex codebase or the painter refining each brushstroke, your solitary rituals are the cradle of your genius. Rejection might echo louder than applause, but that does not diminish the significance of the work.

Self-Care for Creative Balance
We all require essential ingredients to be well-balanced and connected as living entities. No framework or positive mantra can replace the holistic balance our bodies require to thrive. Before we venture into practices of the mind, we need to take stock of our well-being and the maintenance schedule we may or may not be following. When we deprioritize these essentials, we're deprioritizing our own self-care.
Here is a quick exercise: write down three non-negotiable self-care practices. These are just for you and your body. Keep this list visible, and commit to honoring them daily. It only takes a day or two of actively choosing to honor your non-negotiable self-care practices to begin to feel completely like a person who always honors their self-care. As you make these active choices in the positive direction of self-care and love, you will find a wave of positive energy; indeed, creative energy washes over you each time.
Recognize the role of social connection in overall well-being. While mental health challenges can make it feel like our problems are too big to share, maintaining social connections is essential. True and deep friendship is formed on the fruits of vulnerability. We all share the common experiences of pain, loss, and suffering, as well as joy, excitement, and abundance. But it cannot only be the positive side we share with our friends. Because in doing so, we're cutting our loved ones out of half of our humanity, and in turn, we are cut out from half of theirs. It's only through weaving together both the dark and the light that deep and meaningful relationships are formed.
Regarding mental health concerns, feel equally validated in the fact that we all have them. Give yourself grace and time should you decide to find a mental health professional to work with. They are not all created equally, nor is one mental health professional the right fit for all people.
It may take some time to find a person who connects with you and has the experience required to handle your unique concerns. Give yourself grace during this process. There are excellent resources such as BetterHelp for virtual therapy or Psychology Today for a directory of mental health professionals in your area.
By creating frameworks for yourself in this way and making healthy choices, you're helping yourself and becoming a positive influence for those around you. You never know who you might help by simply stating that talking to someone about your problems is normal and healthy and showing how grounded you can become once you honor these simple practices.
Tools That Meet You Where You Are
In these moments of vulnerability and doubt, the tools we rely on can become our lifeline or our roadblock. Creativity thrives when supported by frameworks that don't stifle its organic flow but instead empower and meet us where we are, even in our most unsteady steps. While rejection and self-doubt may be constants in the creative landscape, we are not destined to face them alone or without support.
